First, a bit of history, because who came up with the idea of making a gigantic sandwich with everything on it? The club sandwich was most likely invented in America at the end of the nineteenth century, during a horse race in New York.

Timing is everything

But what could be so difficult about building a sandwich? A club sandwich requires mastery of all the basic techniques. Crispy bacon from the pan, crunchy toasted bread and creamy mayo. Everything also has to be ready at precisely the same moment. That crispy bacon suddenly becomes much less delicious when you’re chewing on tough bread.

Delicious toppings for your club sandwich

A classic club sandwich consists of three layers of toasted white sandwich bread topped with chicken breast, bacon, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise, with chips on the side, of course. Naturally, you can vary this endlessly. Truffle mayo, grilled chicken and avocado are popular toppings that always work well.

How to make the best classic club sandwich

  • Spread 4 tablespoons of mayonnaise on both sides of the slices of bread. Toast the bread in a pan or toaster until golden brown on both sides. Let them cool.
  • Spread four slices of bread on one side with the remaining mayonnaise and, optionally, some mustard.
  • Now make two stacks: place a lettuce leaf on the mayo-mustard side of two slices of bread. Top with turkey breast or chicken breast. Place a slice of bread on top, then add more lettuce, bacon and tomato slices. Season the tomato with salt and pepper. Place the final two slices of bread on top. Insert toothpicks to hold the sandwich together.
  • Cut the sandwiches diagonally into four triangles and serve with some chips.
