Toppings for your hummus sandwich

Hummus: the Mediterranean chickpea spread that makes many a heart beat faster. These toppings make it even more delicious.

Make your own hummus
Pumpkin hummus, spicy hummus, falafel hummus, sun-dried tomato hummus – you name it, manufacturers make a hummus variation of it. However, we prefer homemade hummus without any fuss as the base for your sandwich. Chef Boele de Vries explains here which kitchen gadget will make it velvety smooth.
Toppings for your hummus
1. Crispy bacon
A crunch works beautifully on your hummus sandwich. A crispy counterpart makes your creamy spread even more appealing.
2. Sumac and za’atar
Sumac has a sharp, sour flavor that is floral at the same time. Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend with a full, herbaceous flavor. Everything your hummus is asking for.
3. Pine nuts, parsley and lime
Pine nuts provide crunch, but make sure you toast them well. Parsley makes it herbaceous, while the lime zest gives it plenty of freshness.
4. Pomegranate seeds
Crunch + freshness. You get it by now. Sprinkle a little chili flakes over the top for some extra heat. A little za’atar wouldn’t be out of place here either.
