10x incredibly fucking unnecessary facts about pizza

We’d happily eat pizza every week. Because let’s be honest, a round, crispy dough base with killer tomato sauce, cheese and your favorite toppings is impossible to resist, right?! Our colleague Kiki from Amayzine thinks so too—and more than that: she knows all kinds of fucking ridiculous pizza facts. And now we do too. Did you already know these?

1. Hold on tight. Immediate error. The Hawaiian pizza was invented in… Canada. Yes, sorry.
2. Women order pizza with vegetables twice as often as men do. Pizza delivery drivers also say that women tip more often.
3. In America, 36 percent of pizzas are topped with pepperoni. The most popular pizza toppings in Japan are squid and ‘mayo jaga’: mayonnaise, potato and bacon.
4. Now for the world’s most expensive round friend: the 24K pizza. The showpiece of New York restaurant Industry Kitchen, with toppings that are, well, a little more expensive than you’re used to. White Stilton cheese, Ossetra caviar, truffles, foie gras and gold flakes. How much does it cost? 2,000 dollars. Gulp. But hey, you can also opt for a slice (1/8 pizza) at 250 dollars apiece. Bargain.
5. An average slice of cheese pizza contains 220 to 370 calories and, honestly: that’s why you’re better off having pizza for breakfast than muesli.
6. In June 2014, Englishman Pali Grewal won the world’s fastest pizza maker competition in Las Vegas: he kneaded and baked 3 pizzas in just over 32 seconds. Respect.
7. In 2001, Pizza Hut made history by delivering a salami pizza to… space. Yep, to the International Space Station (ISS), to be precise. The company paid the Russians 900 million (!) for the delivery and also ran advertising around the stunt.
8. Don’t underestimate the pizza industry: in America alone, Thirty. Billion. Dollars. Per. Year. Is. Generated. By. The. Sale. Of. Pizza. 36 percent of Americans see pizza as the ultimate breakfast (and you’re still eating muesli?)
9. Mozzarella is considered the best cheese for pizza. Seriously, scientific research was conducted on this in 2014. According to that research, mozzarella melts and browns better than other types of cheese.
10. In 2016, 400 pizza makers in Naples broke the world record for the longest pizza. In no less than 11 hours, they made a pizza exactly 1,853 metres long. They used 2 tonnes of mozzarella, 2 tonnes of flour, 1.5 tonnes of tomato sauce, 200 litres of oil and almost 30 kilograms of basil.
