11 confessions heard in the restaurant industry

Most people who work in restaurants aren’t that loose-lipped. They guard their secrets carefully, making it seem as if everything is going smoothly, without a cloud in the sky. But when it can be anonymous, you do get to hear a thing or two. What would your nickname be at the place you visit pretty much every week?

Manager gone
If the restaurant is doing really well, while you’ve been looking for a manager for six months, you shouldn’t hire a new manager but promote some people from the team.
We are family
When a restaurant owner says: the staff feels like our family, they don’t mean a nice TV family, but a real family where everyone argues with everyone else for incomprehensible reasons.
OK boomer
I’m really not going to scan a QR code to look at your menu. Sorry, then I’m just a boomer.
Compliment
When people say to me: compliments to the chef, I always say: I’ll pass it on. But our chef isn’t a real top chef; he’s a 19-year-old kid, stoned half the time, and he’s only been working here for three weeks.
Flipping out
People are condescending about working in a restaurant kitchen: just flipping burgers. I think ninety percent of those people wouldn’t survive an hour in a busy kitchen.
Ah, l’amour
Cooking together with your sweetheart? Not exactly romantic. Out! Of! The! Way!
Spice it up
When people order ‘extra spicy’, I can already see the cooks beaming. They love it!
Soup of the day
An unpleasant guest complains to the waitress: I have no idea what kind of nonsense you’re all coming up with here. I’ve had your soupe du jour before, and it was completely different from this.
Hungry!
When you spend ten to twelve hours working your butt off preparing expensive star-chef meals, and then at home have to tear open a pack of fish fingers or chicken nuggets because you’re so hungry.
Ouch
Those kitchen knives that won’t cut through a tomato, but turn out to be razor-sharp when they hit your finger.
Nickname
A regular guest at a restaurant? You can be sure the people in the front of house have come up with a nickname for you: Sandra Chai Latte or Mr. Toupee-Tournedos.
