11 eating habits that prove we’re not nearly as grown-up as we think

By now, we’re all (hopefully) long since fully grown-up. We’ve grown out of being true “I-don’t-like-it” kids who wouldn’t eat their food for the craziest reasons to… Well, to what, exactly? The eating habits below show that sometimes we’re still not nearly as grown-up as we think we are.

1. Never completely finishing your plate
That’s me to a tee, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Just leave one little blob, puddle, mound or whatever you want to call it. Always, no matter what you’re eating.
2. Adding sauce to everything
With mayonnaise, the queen of all sauces, of course. Or how about applesauce, to cool down that hot lump of potato? You won’t finish your plate without sauce. You didn’t as a child, and now that you’re about 20 years older, you still don’t.
3. Eating what you dislike first, then the good stuff (or vice versa)
Who else does this? Forcing yourself through the worst part of your plate first, so you can reward yourself with the good stuff at the end. Those disgusting Brussels sprouts first, followed by delicious chicken cordon bleu, for example. A trick you probably already used as a child.
4. Always mashing everything together
You undoubtedly spent the first few months of your life eating lots of Olvarit. You know, those baby purées in little glass jars. They went down so easily. Very convenient, since you had few or no teeth yet. Many adults still absolutely love mashing their potatoes, vegetables and meat together into a messy blob on their plate. (Now it suddenly sounds really disgusting, doesn’t it?)
5. Never eating all your vegetables
Disgusting, limp, overcooked, soggy vegetables are definitely a childhood food trauma everyone recognizes. So it’s perfectly understandable that vegetables still traumatize you a little as an adult.
6. Always leaving your bread crusts
Those tough bread crusts aren’t for you. Not now, never. Give them to the birds instead.
7. No whole wheat, just white
Honestly, wouldn’t everyone rather have a soft slice of white bread with sprinkles or luncheon meat every day? Just admit it. And besides, there’s a good chance your whole-wheat bread isn’t actually whole wheat at all. I see a good reason to switch back to white bread.
8. Hiding food so your plate looks emptier
Or feeding it to the dog. We’ve all done it, and many of us undoubtedly still do.
9. Always eating in front of the TV
The difference from back then? You used to watch Fox Kids and Nickelodeon. Now you watch Netflix. Or Disney+. Okay, sometimes Nickelodeon too. (RIP Fox Kids)
10. Not liking “normal” cheese, but loving melted cheese
Here’s another good one: not wanting cold, uncooked tomatoes, but loving tomato sauce over pasta.
11. Being unable to eat without spilling
Maybe it’s not really a habit, but some people are champions at it their entire lives: spilling. And that’s a very positive way to wrap things up, because it turns out research proves that people who make a big mess with their food are healthier. Ha!
