Picky eaters around the world: what will they still eat?

As a foodie, you can hardly imagine it, but there really are people who like nothing. They have an inexplicable aversion to green vegetables or mushrooms, never eat fish and would rather not try new dishes either. Eating out is a disaster and cooking for these types is a nightmare. On Reddit, someone asked: what do these picky eaters around the world eat? Does it differ by country?

In America, picky eaters often turn to mac and cheese or pizza. No, they’re not just children, but adults who simply don’t like all that much. They may also be willing to try chicken nuggets, but things shouldn’t get much crazier than that.
A little soup
What do you serve in Canada when someone who likes almost nothing comes over for dinner? Tomato soup and a toasted sandwich, the online forum recommends. Most people will still happily eat that.
Latkes
Israel: latkes. They’re potato pancakes. You can eat them with applesauce or ketchup. Seriously? A sort of rösti, then? Sounds really delicious!
Potato pancakes
An Irish father makes potato cakes for his picky daughter from leftover mashed potatoes from the night before, with a little flour. Fry them briefly in a frying pan and voilà: enjoy your meal.
Rajma chawal
Think there are no difficult eaters in India? Think again. ‘As a child, I only ate rajma chawal, and I still like eating that best,’ someone responds. ‘It’s simply rice with black beans, nothing special really.’
Tortilla omelet
In Mexico, they know what to do with fussy eaters. They cut up some tortillas from the day before, fry them in a frying pan and pour beaten egg over them. It’s called ‘migas’, and with a little sour cream and salsa, even the pickiest eater here will enjoy a plateful.
Beans and banana
In El Salvador, difficult eaters get a plate of beans and fried banana. Simple, quick to prepare and clean plates all around!
Sushi without fish
Korean children get gimbap, a kind of sushi but without fish. White rice, vegetables, perhaps a little chicken, and that’s it. There are even hamburger gimbaps, with cheese and ham inside.
Ikea
In Finland, picky eaters shudder at all the fish served there. Meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy—that’s about it. ‘More or less like the Ikea menu, but with homemade meatballs,’ writes a Finn on the forum.
Omurice
The children’s menu in Japan includes omurice. It’s rice fried with a little ketchup, wrapped in an omelet.
Liver sausage
In Norway, things are very different. Most children like liver sausage. For the truly difficult eaters, they serve this: caviar. Seriously! Not Russian caviar, but smoked cod roe.
Stewed meat
And in Belgium, they don’t worry about fussy eaters. Fries with stewed meat, perhaps with applesauce on the side, and everyone is happy.
