15 brilliant sandwiches from around the world

Bahn Mi uit De wereld thuis

There’s lunch and then there’s lunch: there are soggy sandwiches with sweaty cheese, and then there’s a glorious lunch feast like the American Reuben Sandwich or the French croque monsieur. And a separate site has been created for those top-notch sandwiches: Taste Atlas. We’re happy to introduce these fifteen fantastic sandwiches from around the world in our sandwich hit parade.

Reuben Sandwich – America

Rye bread with cheese, sauerkraut and corned beef – what a classic. A generous spread of Russian Dressing, a sauce made with mayo, ketchup, garlic and horseradish, finishes it off.

Torta – Mexico

Torta doesn’t mean cake; torta means a dream of a sandwich. Between a sliced white roll, called a ‘bolillo’ in Mexico, they put Mexican cheese, cilantro, avocado and chicken, topped with hot salsa. But honestly, anything can go on that torta, as long as it’s Mexican.

Croque monsieur – France

No, no, it’s not an ordinary toasted sandwich, it’s a deluxe toasted sandwich. Gruyère and ham, toasted on bread, simply delicious.

Grilled cheese – America

That croque monsieur inspired Americans to create their grilled cheese. White bread with a thick layer of cheese, especially cheese that melts perfectly. The difference: it isn’t toasted, but fried in hot butter. Divine.

BLT America

A whole stack: toasted white bread with crispy bacon, lettuce and tomatoes. With a little mayonnaise, hmmm…

Bocadillo – Spain

Simply the Spanish word for ‘sandwich’, but when you order one, it’s something completely different from a Dutch peanut butter sandwich. A small baguette filled with grilled peppers, a thick layer of jamón and fried schnitzels, topped with tomato, olé!

Submarine – America

Yes, it’s a big country, so they have plenty of sandwiches too. This one is a whopper: a ciabatta filled with provolone, ham and salami. Olive oil, tomatoes, onions, lettuce and dried Italian herbs complete it. Once you’ve finished the sandwich, you need an hour to recover with the top button of your trousers undone, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious. Is food coma an American invention too?

Cheesesteak America

Say goodbye to the vitamins: a Philly Cheesesteak contains strips of steak, a thick layer of provolone (that cheese again) and fried onions.

Francesinha – Portugal

Because they themselves believe this sandwich was inspired by the French croque, in Portugal they call it the little Frenchman. It’s a completely different sandwich: ham, smoked sausage and fried steak between slices of bread, melted cheese on top and then a delicious gravy-like sauce poured over it. Not exactly a light snack, and here they often eat it for dinner too.

Bahn Mi – Vietnam

French influence in Vietnam in a single sandwich: a baguette filled with ham, lettuce, cilantro, pâté, tomatoes and chillies. The pickles on the sandwich are special: pickled raw vegetables, deliciously spicy and crunchy. A petit peu of mayonnaise and enjoy.

Avocado toast – America

Put mashed avocado on your brown bread, with a little olive oil, lemon juice and some freshly ground pepper, and without realising it you’re eating a typically American avocado toast.

Club Sandwich – America

A lunch dish that resembles Jenga—good luck. Three slices of toasted bread filled with chicken breast, bacon, tomato and lettuce. A little mayonnaise, tomatoes and lettuce, and that entire wobbly stack on a plate with a handful of crisps on the side: a classic.

Piadina Romagnola – Italy

A soft flatbread filled with soft white cheese, rocket, tomato and Parma ham. Fold it in half and dig in—delicious!

Cuban Sandwich – America

An invention by Cuban immigrants, and what a brilliant invention it is. Soft baguette, sliced open and grilled briefly. Then fill your sandwich with ham, cheese, thick slices of pork loin and pickles, with a little mustard.

Roast beef sandwich – America

In the Netherlands, this is simply called a roast beef sandwich, but in America they also put cheese on the roast beef, with a little barbecue sauce and a generous dollop of mustard.
