3 super-tasty flavor hacks to try right away

There are truly countless cooking hacks out there that promise to take your dishes to the next level: simple alternatives, additions, or ways of using ingredients that are supposed to make everything just a little tastier. Some sound logical, others a bit more far-fetched, but a few are definitely worth trying!

And sometimes you come across something again that you already know isn’t for you. Spreading mayonnaise on the outside of a toasted sandwich before frying it so it gets even crispier and browner? Been there, done that, not impressed. Hot mayo—who wants that flavor? But these tips do make me curious:
Soy sauce in the popcorn butter
When I make popcorn at home, I add all kinds of flavorings to the melted butter (to drizzle over it): furikake is one of my favorites, and a little mix of smoked paprika, a tiny bit of onion powder, and salt is also great. I’m definitely going to try this too; why didn’t I think of it sooner? The delicious umami of soy sauce combined with creamy melted butter: yum.
Coffee in the brownie batter
A small splash of coffee adds depth to chocolate’s already amazing flavor. If you start with a little, you don’t have to worry about it becoming overpowering; you can always use more in your next batch.
Mustard in the mac ’n cheese
Mac ‘n cheese may be hard to ruin (although you can leave out the raisins if you’re making it for me), but it’s pretty easy to make it even tastier. The basic recipe for Mac ‘n’ cheese is simple, but feel free to add flavorings such as paprika (there it is again) and also: mustard. Especially a somewhat sharp mustard adds just the right amount of spicy bite to cut through those rich, full flavors that can sometimes make the dish feel heavy.
