4 ridiculous TikTok hits, and 1 to make up for it

Are there still any millennials out there who aren’t on TikTok? I’m obviously addressing a group here that I don’t belong to myself because I’m muuuch older, but I’m always curious about what’s happening in the world of food, whatever the medium. That’s why I found it absolutely hilarious that someone who calls herself an older millennial, who does indeed own some very hip green eyeshadow but is otherwise completely out of the loop when it comes to TikTok, took a look at the food toks of the moment.

Of course, you can find some really great hacks on the platform, and how could you not applaud an entire generation happily making its way into the kitchen because of it? Still, there are also plenty of completely deranged videos, and we previously wrote about the danger you can face if you blindly follow some of the nonsense health-related advice.
Lettuce water? Give me a break. On both fronts, positive and negative, editor Mackenzie Fegan had plenty to say when she looked at popular food toks. Starting with the ones she thought were stupid:
Adding protein to coffee
‘Can we just leave coffee alone? Wasn’t it fine as it was, without ghee and protein powders? Maybe TikTok itself isn’t to blame; rather, fitness fanatics and the “wellness” industry.’ What’s more, according to this expert, it is absolutely not good for you to consume too much protein…

Raw onion ‘chips’
‘Dipping raw onion slices in salsa or tomato sauce instead of chips?? I’m out.’ Who comes up with this stuff anyway?!

Stuffing garlic up your nose
‘I’m a big fan of the trend of simply adding much more garlic to a dish than the recipe calls for. But this? I could have done without witnessing this. Chaos.’

Everything on one sheet pan
Okay, the end goal isn’t bad at all. This pasta dish probably tastes great; roasted squash, roasted garlic… ‘But I don’t know. Chunks of butternut squash, sliced mushrooms, two gigantic onion halves, those bulbs of garlic… They all have different cooking times. And that baking sheet is far too full. I’d invest in a few small sheet pans, young lady.’
@everything_delish This butternut squash & roasted garlic pasta with crispy mushrooms + rosemary cost me $16 to make and serves 4 people! #pasta #fallrecipes #roastedgarlic ♬ Call me – 90sFlav
Here’s what Mackenzie was a fan of:
Cooking in the forest as ASMR
‘I thought I had nothing to do with ASMR, but I find this extremely satisfying. I like the idea of suddenly being transported to a completely different place; that’s what I enjoy about TikTok. And kudos for the knife skills.’
