30 years in prison demanded in double murder case at McDonald’s in Zwolle

mcdonald’s

On March 30, 2022, a major tragedy took place at the McDonald’s in Zwolle Noord; two men were liquidated that day. The two victims were brothers, and they had arranged to meet their third brother at this McDonald’s location to discuss a business dispute. The three had invested hundreds of thousands in Turkish real estate, and that had not gone entirely well.

But when 30-year-old Veysel Ü. entered the McDonald’s and saw his brothers, he decided to shoot the two of them; one was hit by five bullets and the other by six. The Public Prosecution Service therefore speaks of a ‘highly targeted action,’ although the precise motive remains unclear.

Panic broke out at the McDonald’s

The McDonald’s was extremely busy at the time (understandably, when isn’t it?) so panic logically broke out immediately after this hail of bullets. ‘Bystanders came to the McDonald’s for a McFlurry or chicken nuggets, not to suffer trauma,’ the public prosecutor says. One of those present at the McDonald’s was a member of the military, and said he saw a trained marksman at work.

‘Every bullet hit its target,’ the public prosecutor also says. And, to be honest, that’s just as well, because this happened at six o’clock in the evening, when the McDonald’s is at its busiest — things could have turned out much worse if the shooter had accidentally hit a bystander.

No life sentence

Despite the crime scene being a public place, the fact that it was a premeditated double murder and the trauma he inflicted on innocent bystanders, a life sentence is not being sought. The suspect has expressed remorse and the likelihood of reoffending is estimated to be very low — hence the requested sentence of 30 years.
