4x breakfast in Amsterdam

ontbijt in Amsterdam

Going out for breakfast is the new going out for dinner. Some find it decadent, while others eagerly embrace it. Either way, here’s where you can enjoy the best breakfast in the capital.

The Lobby
The restaurant belonging to the chic yet homely Hotel V. There are now two Lobby locations: The Lobby Nesplein and The Lobby Fizeaustraat. The menu changes regularly at both establishments, but you can always come here for the classics. Actually, everything is delicious. French toast, eggs Benedict, American pancakes, a currant bun with farmhouse cheese and butter, fresh fruit with raspberry mascarpone and mint, or farm yoghurt with blueberries, coconut flakes and agave. We can rightly call The Lobby a breakfast haven. Hangovers have also been taken into consideration: on weekends, the Bloody Marys flow freely.

Open for breakfast seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nes 49 and Fizeaustraat 2.

Bakers & Roasters
A chain, yes, but a really good one. A New Zealand concept with eggs prepared in every way imaginable – poached, fried, scrambled, you name it, they’ll make your egg just the way you like it. Eggs play the leading role in many dishes, but there are also countless sides. Toast, avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, potatoes, halloumi, bacon… And I could go on. They also have plenty of sweet treats – every day they bake various fresh cakes – and good coffee.

Open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch and lunch from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kadijksplein 16 and Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 54.

Gartine
Right in the city centre, between Amsterdam’s two busiest streets, the Kalverstraat and the Rokin, you’ll find Gartine. A small establishment with an excellent breakfast and lunch menu that changes regularly. The lovely owners make you feel incredibly welcome, and the food is very delicious. Surprising dishes, always prepared with great care in a tiny kitchen at the back of the establishment. They cook a lot with fruit and vegetables from their own kitchen garden. Dishes such as toasted brioche with soft-boiled eggs, béarnaise sauce, spinach and roasted buckwheat, or a savoury choux pastry filled with Blue d‘Auvergne, a stewed pear and roasted poppy seed oil feature on the menu.

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea flow into one another. Taksteeg 7.

Worst Wijncafé
This restaurant keeps eating breakfast out exclusive: you can only have brunch here on Sundays. You might as well block the next Sunday in your calendar now. You can order buckwheat crêpes with artichoke purée, tomato and goat’s cheese, or with seasonal fruit compote and crème fraîche; brioche toast with fennel sausage, fennel and tomato; and poached eggs with bordelaise marrow sauce. The wine list here is fantastic, so if you can handle it on a Sunday morning, order a bottle of wine. Is a bottle a little too much of a good thing? They always have around ten wines available by the glass as well.

Open Sundays for brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barentszstraat 171.
