5 methods for reheating your pizza: this is by far the best

Pizza aangebrand

It’s almost hard to imagine, but there are situations in which you can’t finish an entire pizza. Because you fall asleep drunk, for example (I’m not speaking from experience). And yes, then you wake up with a few slices of cold pizza. How do you make them delicious again? It’s been tested, and the answer may surprise you.

You ordered the best pizza of your life. Every bite is a delight. But the closer you get to the end, the harder it becomes. It’s unbelievable but true: you’re not going to make it. And just like that, you have a few slices of pizza left. OMG! That delicious melted cheese, crispy crust, perfect base… You’re not going to throw that away, are you? Of course not! Into the fridge it goes; tomorrow you’ll continue your feast. Especially now that you’re about to learn how to get those slices really hot again. With a crispy crust and perfectly melted cheese.

Heating up a cold slice of pizza

You probably have several heat sources in your kitchen. So there are also several ways to reheat your pizza. Which method is the best? Your oven, microwave and Airfryer are all contenders, as are your frying pan and barbecue. The Kitchn tested all five methods. The result: there’s a very clear winner.

Don’t try this at home

First of all: the microwave. It was clearly not a success. The slice should have been hot within 45 to 60 seconds, but that didn’t happen. On top of that, the slice became incredibly limp. Also a flop: the Airfryer. That surprised us. Wasn’t the Airfryer the holy grail of the kitchen? The thing in which we can make pretty much everything delicious, from spring-roll frikandels to oliebollen? Well, not pizza. The slice came out just as limp as it did from the microwave. It was warmer, admittedly, but that was about all that could be said for it.

A little more success

Then there’s the barbecue. Apparently, it’s quite a good method. Your pizza crust becomes really crispy when you put it on the grill. The downside: the cheese burns quickly. And you have to be in the mood to fire up the entire barbecue for one pathetic little slice of pizza. A better option is the oven. The pizza gets hot, the cheese melts well and the crust stays crisp. Are there any disadvantages? A few. Preheating your oven takes a while. And if you don’t properly remove any excess plastic, it will burn along with the pizza. I’m just mentioning it, in case you’re reheating your pizza with a hangover. Just being thoughtful. Not speaking from experience, of course.

The best method for reheating your pizza

The test produced one clear winner: the good old frying pan! That’s right, when it comes to reheating pizza, nothing can beat your trusty pan. Here’s what you do: take a cast-iron pan and place it over medium heat. Don’t put a lid on the pan (yet). First, wait until the crust becomes crispy. How can you tell? By the glistening fat and the cheese gradually melting. Then sprinkle a few drops of water around the pizza, turn the heat to low and put the lid on the pan. Wait one minute until the cheese has completely melted.

The result is a pizza slice reheated in no time, with a crispy crust and perfectly melted cheese. You’re welcome.
