5 other Brabant delicacies you really need to know

We all know the sausage rolls, Bossche Bollen and eierkoeken. But Brabant has many more delicacies! Do you already know these delicious local heroes?

Brabant delicacy: Ginnekoek
Ginneken is the most Burgundian spot in Breda. So it’s no surprise that this neighbourhood even has its own pastry. Five years ago, Peter and Patricia from Bakker Joppen came up with the Ginnekoek. This pastry refers to the neighbourhood itself, but also to the Brabant expression ‘gin koek’, meaning no pastry. Because that’s actually what it isn’t. The Ginnekoek is made with light, croissant-like dough, filled with pastry cream and covered with a thick layer of fondant, making it a true classic typical of Ginneken.

Kut Bier
It certainly has a striking name: the beer made by brewer Janneke from Den Bosch. Janneke, brewer and owner of brewery Boegbeeld, thinks out of the box more often. The name for the white beer with plum originated as a joke when the test brew was jokingly called ‘kutbier’. Before you think that it actually tastes like sh*t, think again. Quite the opposite, in fact: the beer that many Brabanders find amusing is selling like hot cakes, and it has recently also become available in a peach variant.

Flat tits
We’ll stay in the body-parts category for a moment, because ‘flat tits’ are also a household name in Brabant, specifically in Bergen op Zoom. The generously sized pudding buns are also called koeienvlaaien, Groffenkoeken or puddingkoeken. They are best known as Groffenkoeken. They are the result of a failed experiment by baker Jos Groffen 50 years ago. His son Romano still sells around 7,000 ‘flat tits’ every week. For anyone who finds the giant pastry a bit too much of a good thing, smaller tits and even mini flat tits are also available.

Schrobbelèrbonbon
It doesn’t get more Tilburg than this: the Schrobbelèrbonbon. Schrobbelèr, the herbal liqueur in a stone jug, is considered by every Tilburger to be the most delicious liqueur from the south. And if you fill a small cup of pure chocolate with it and pipe a swirl of chocolate cream with hazelnut on top, you get the Schrobbelèrbonbon. You can buy this Tilburg speciality at Huize Geers.

Winky
And then there’s the Winky. According to people who have already tried it, an unforgettable marriage between the bamischijf and the kroket. The Winky comes from the creative kitchen of Wim Wink from Sint Willebrord. Wim suggested combining the ragout from the kroket with the spices and filling of the bamischijf to his snack supplier. By now, the Winky is on the menu at several local snack bars. We predict that this Brabant delicacy will conquer the whole of the Netherlands.
