5 reasons why we’re big fans of Lidl (no, really, it’s not just because of the wine)

Not to take the wind out of your sails straight away, but we regularly get asked whether we happen to own shares in Lidl. Ha! No, we wish we did… but we’re simply genuine fans and think it’s fun and important to share great tips and facts with you. And every now and then, to put together a summary, so we can happily present here: 5 reasons why we’re fans of Lidl.

We’ll kick things off with the news that Lidl is leading the Superlijst Gezondheid. Yay! This list presents the results of a study comparing what eight major supermarket chains in the Netherlands are doing to help their customers choose healthy food and drinks.

1. Deliciously transparent

The study was conducted by Stichting Questionmark, an independent organisation committed to transparency about food products and a better food system. What sets Lidl apart according to the study: they are the only supermarket that reports on the share of products sold that fit within the Schijf van Vijf. Last year, they were also the first ‘regular’ supermarket to stop selling tobacco, and they have set themselves sugar and salt targets, the results of which they also publish transparently every year. Hats off!

2. That superstar cheese

Remember that cheese?! I’m a huge fan of it: the Lidl cheese with three stars from the Beter Leven quality mark. Not only organic (which is often already great, of course), but also subject to additional requirements regarding how the cheesemakers treat the surrounding environment, alongside animal welfare.

3. Fruit-fly-free

This was such good news too, which we recently wrote about: Dutch Lidl no longer sells fruit and vegetables that have to be flown in. This step means a huge reduction in CO2 emissions and supports Dutch farmers and growers in a sustainable partnership.

4. Happy eggs

Lidl was a pioneer in this area too, and we’re still fans of the Kipster eggs you can buy at Lidl in the distinctive blue box. And that box has even been exhibited in a London museum dedicated to branded packaging and advertising!

5. Balls full of happiness

Let’s round off today’s list with a real hit, shall we? The aged cheese and beer bitterballen from Lidl, which nearly sent our colleague Wieke into a swoon. Crisp on the outside, soft, creamy and generously filled on the inside – if that isn’t a top snack to serve with those delicious Lidl wines, we don’t know what is. Cheers!
