The Lidl good-news show is continuing for a little while yet, because besides the very happy cheese story recently (organic combined with the 3-star Better Life quality mark, quite unique), we’ve discovered something else that shows that Lidl is a supermarket trailblazer…
When you’re in the fruit and vegetable section of an organic supermarket, you may notice that all the products are simply displayed loose on the shelves. Just like at the market, where shopping packaging-free is naturally always a pleasure. But in most regular supermarkets, organic products are packaged individually in plastic. What’s the deal?
Nice and loose in the box
Here’s how it works: Lidl is the only non-exclusively organic supermarket in the Netherlands allowed to sell unpackaged organic products, because it complies with the applicable legislation. So, for example, you’ll find organic lemons (which really are best when you want to grate the peel with your Microplane) and organic courgettes simply loose on the shelf, with a neat sticker on them.
Best in fruit and vegetables once again
This saves a whole lot of unnecessary plastic, and we think that’s a great idea. Add to that the fact that Lidl has been voted the best supermarket for fruit and vegetables for the tenth time (a coveted award presented by the Growth from Knowledge institute), and you’ll understand: once again, there’s dancing on the tables! By the way, would they celebrate with this Toblerone ice cream cake, or the giant pink cookie cake?
