5 ways to make your food less spicy

The best rendang ever should be a little spicy. We even think it’s even better with an extra dollop of homemade sambal bajak on the side. Been overconfident and is it all a bit too spicy? Don’t panic, add these ingredients and your dish will be fixed.

After all, too much spice doesn’t necessarily mean that your dish has immediately failed. With a few simple tricks, using products you almost always have at home, it can be solved in no time.
Milk
Dairy is your best friend with spicy food. It not only helps put out the fire when your tongue is burning but also has a cooling effect in dishes. For example, add a splash of milk, yogurt, cooking cream or crème fraîche.
Sugar or honey
Spicy recipes always include a spoonful of sugar to balance the dish. If you want to make it less spicy, add an extra spoonful. Honey works too, of course.
Lime juice
Acidity counteracts spice. That’s why a little lemon or lime juice, or even vinegar, works wonders.
Peanut butter
This golden tip for getting the last bit of peanut butter out of the jar is not only brilliant but also your lifesaver. Peanut butter mellows the chili pepper, making the dish pleasantly spicy.
Stock
If homemade soup, such as this tomato soup, is too spicy, you can always add some extra stock. Just make sure to add a little extra of the other ingredients too. You may end up with some leftover, but freezing soup works perfectly!
