5x These Foods Contain Ridiculous Amounts of Sodium (and That’s Unhealthy)

Ontbijt McDonalds

Salt itself isn’t unhealthy; your body simply needs the mineral sodium. But almost everyone eats too much salt, and these five fast-food menu favorites are the biggest culprits.

The average Dutch person eats 9 grams of salt a day. We add some of it ourselves – salt on your boiled egg, salt in the pasta water or over your steak – but most of it is put into food by manufacturers. Bread, meat and cheese, ready-made mixes and packets: all packed with salt. According to the Netherlands Nutrition Centre, 6 grams of salt is the maximum. Eating too much salt could cause high blood pressure or kidney problems, among other things (although there are also experts who question this).

If you’d prefer to eat a little less salt, you should definitely avoid these five things, because they are incredibly salty.

#1: A slice of pizza from Domino’s or Pizza Hut

Especially pepperoni pizza is terribly salty: the sausage is packed with salt, the cheese on the pizza is salty, there’s a lot of salt in the dough and the tomato sauce contains salt too.

#2: Subway spicy Italian

Well, hello: salami and ham on a baguette. What did you expect? Very salty, of course, and those few slices of tomato and cucumber don’t help at all.

#3: Curly fries

Oh, so delicious—and Burger King has them too: those curly fries. They’re covered in a really tasty spice mix (which then sticks to your fingers, but that’s beside the point). Wait: that spice mix is largely… salt. Regular fries are salty too, but still just a little less so.

#4: Spicy Chicken from Burger King

Lean meat, chicken. No wonder bodybuilders eat so much of it. But don’t choose Burger King’s Spicy Chicken, because it contains so much salt that your blood pressure will go through the roof.

#5: Breakfast at McDonald’s

A delicious start to the day: the breakfast with a muffin containing a sausage or bacon. You’ll quickly finish the bottle of juice that comes with breakfast, because that salty meat is bound to make you thirsty!
