7x the strangest products at Plus

Plus supermarkt

A visit to the supermarket is an outing. Especially when you come across the strangest things. Because how on earth do they come up with them? This time: 7 weird products you can find at Plus.

We love going there, honestly. Even though we may not be crazy about their tiramisu and we don’t think their meat salad is exactly a must-try either, there are plenty of things about Plus that we think are… a big plus. They really do have great deals, good wines (they’ve already been named the best wine supermarket in the Netherlands 9 times!) and a fantastic loyalty scheme. And: a wide range. Lots of choice when doing your groceries, in other words. Very nice, of course, but it also means you sometimes come across some very unusual products. Things that really make you wonder: how? Why? And who buys this?!

Crownless pineapple (€2.19)

No, this isn’t a Photoshop error. This really is a pineapple without a crown. I’ve never seen one in a supermarket before, except at Plus. What could be the reason for putting a half-dismantled pineapple on the shelves? Because people think a pineapple is too big and therefore annoying to lug around? Because people can’t be bothered to cut off the crown? Either way, I think a pineapple without its crown looks rather bare, sitting there on top of its head. It suddenly looks a lot less tropical too, don’t you think?

Roll of sauerkraut mash (€3.29)

I’ve never seen sauerkraut mash in such a strange package. Isn’t this the packaging used for liver sausage? I honestly can’t think of anything else that’s packaged this way. Well, this roll of sauerkraut mash, obviously. I also immediately get an unappetizing image in my head when I think about how you’re supposed to squeeze this mash out of its roll. I won’t go into detail, because then nobody will ever buy this roll of sauerkraut mash again. I guarantee you.

Tomato soup in a roll (€5.49)

Another non-liver sausage in liver sausage packaging. And what a product: tomato soup. I would be totally stressed if I had to open this package. It’s going to splatter everywhere when you cut off the side, right? No, soup is not something you should package in a roll. Maybe even less so than sauerkraut mash.

Beer burger (€4.49)

Beer is literally processed into e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. We don’t mind. We’re absolutely crazy about Lidl’s bitterballen filled with beer and cheese, for example. So we reckon there’s a good chance we’ll enjoy these beer burgers too. But honestly… It is a little weird. And expensive too. Especially that.

Luxury rocket (€1.09)

Yes, this is simply a bag of rocket. What’s luxurious about it, heaven only knows. Is there a diamond at the bottom of the bag? Is it mixed with truffle or caviar? Have the leaves been dipped in gold? I don’t know; I can’t see anything special about this bag of lettuce. The price doesn’t necessarily reveal the luxury of this product either. I don’t think it’s that expensive.

Black lemon cheese (€6)

I find this block of cheese so fascinating. Jet black, with a citrus flavour. You’d want to have that on your cheeseboard, wouldn’t you? You’ll just have to put up with the raised eyebrows from your guests. It costs a bit too, so they’d better eat it.

Chicken lollipops (€5.50)

These are pieces of chicken on sticks sold as lollipops. Not for licking, then, as we’re generally used to with lollipops. No, you’d still be licking three months from now. These lollipops are meant to be chewed. Or gnawed on, which is probably a better way to put it in this case.
