8 new food emojis are coming and we can’t wait

Were you, like countless other people, also sitting there wringing your hands and biting your nails while waiting to find out which new food emojis the almighty Unicode Consortium (the company behind those thousands of emojis you most likely make your way through every day) is bringing us in 2020? And are you especially curious about which food emojis those are this year? (Chances are high if you’re reading FavorFlav right now.) Well [drumroll], here they are:

Blueberries, olive, bell pepper, flatbread, tamales, fondue, teapot and bubble tea.

Corn dough rolls
Blueberry, olive, bell pepper, teapot—so far, everything is clear. Flatbread gets a little more exciting (is it a roti wrap? An Armenian lavash?), but those tamales? That’s an extremely exotic one for us Dutch people. Where do tamales actually fit in, you may be wondering? We can tell you that they are corn dough rolls, steamed in corn or banana leaves with a savory or sweet filling. They are often eaten for breakfast in Mexico and have by now also become mainstream in the United States.

I have a feeling we’re going to quickly turn this emoji into a sausage roll or frikandel roll, simply with a slightly unusual pastry crust.
Bubble tea
That bubble tea is of course also pretty specific, but as far as we’re concerned, it’s a very welcome addition to the range. And then there’s the fondue! Yes! Bring it on! You can’t see what’s in the pan, but the fact that it’s a Swiss pot makes it synonymous with cheese fondue to us. And if there’s ONE thing that makes us hysterically (but also very cozily) happy, it’s a warm, creamy, bubbling bath full of melted Swiss cheese. But of course, you can also send this emoji to your friends when you’re really just suggesting opening one of those ready-made, disgustingly delicious little packets…
Where is the new peach?
These new additions will be ready for use from March, although it may take a while before your phone makes the necessary updates available so you can actually send them around. They also appear to be resistant to suggestive use (the successors to the aubergine and peach are still a little way off), although of course you never know who will get creative with what. In any case, have lots of fun with them when they arrive!
