Smac

The word ‘spam’, the American Smac, is short for ‘spiced ham’. Did you know that people in Hawaii eat a lot of the canned stuff? And not because it’s cheap, but because they know how to prepare Smac.

Sausage

Americans eat an average of 20 million hot dogs a year, all together. And Joey Chestnut, hot-dog-eating champion, wolfs down 76 of them in just ten minutes. Respect.

Drinking water

Drink plenty of water, yes yes, you have to, and it’s good for you. Did you know it also means fewer cavities and less tartar, as well as fresher breath?

Fluorescent sandwich topping

Peanut butter can glow in the dark: if you leave your peanut butter sandwich under a bright lamp for a while, it will then be glow in the dark.

Cherry or popcorn?

The most popular jelly bean flavor was Very Cherry. At least, until 1998, when Buttered Popcorn was introduced as a new flavor. It immediately became the crowd favorite!

Anti-fog

Does your bathroom mirror keep fogging up? Rub a slice of cucumber over it and the fog will disappear.

Crooked

Bananas float in water. And if you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, you can reduce the itching by rubbing a banana peel over the bump.

Tasty sticker

The stickers on apples, bananas and mandarins are simply edible. So don’t panic if you accidentally eat a little bit of one. On the other hand, you don’t need to start collecting all the stickers to stick on a cracker—edible doesn’t mean tasty.

A sandwich from home

Astronaut John Young smuggled a corned beef sandwich aboard a spacecraft. That’s forbidden, because crumbs naturally float around without gravity and could damage the shuttle. Since then, NASA has had extra safety checks to prevent astronauts from bringing a packed lunch.
