AI: this is how much more expensive the Christmas dinner classics are this year
Old news: life has become more expensive. The days when we laughingly and thoughtlessly filled our shopping carts with premium brands and exclusive specialties are over. At least if we want to have some of our money left at the end of the month, rather than the other way around. And unfortunately, Christmas won’t be any different. We’ll also be paying more for those corny but oh-so-delicious Christmas classics.
Exactly how much more was investigated by RTL Nieuws in collaboration with Superscanner. And believe us… the results aren’t pretty.
Dutch shrimp: +32%
Whether you go for the classic version or a shrimp cocktail 2.0, it makes no damn difference to your wallet. You’ll be paying more—no less than 32% more, in fact.
Carpaccio: +5%
Serving carpaccio is hardly the smartest idea if you’re trying to watch your spending over Christmas. Cheese, pesto, olive oil and pine nuts are already among the most expensive products in the supermarket. And then the carpaccio itself is getting 5% more expensive…
Unox chicken ragout: +18%
Ah, the good old pastry case. Could this be one of the most eaten starters at Christmas dinners ever? Take note: you’ll be paying 18% more for it this year.
House white wine: +10%
Yep, your favorite house wine has gone up in price too. You’ll undoubtedly have noticed if you stock up on it every week (ahem, not me).
House red wine: +12%
House red wine also costs more this year—12% more, to be exact. Cut back on wine, then? I’d rather not, although… A Christmas without a drunk uncle who gets just a little too gross after too much wine does sound pretty appealing.
Christmas stollen: +13%
A classic sight when you come downstairs on Christmas morning: that delicious, warm Christmas stollen, filled with soft almond paste and sprinkled with just a little too much powdered sugar, proudly sitting in the middle of the table. Appreciate it extra this year, because it cost 13% more.
Aviko potato croquettes: +16%
The first person on Earth who doesn’t like potato croquettes has yet to be found. Sob: they’ve become 16% more expensive this year. At least don’t stop me from turning on the air fryer again this year (tip: this recipe for oven-baked potato croquettes with Parmesan!).
Venison steak: +10%
That deliciously tender venison steak on your plate was already a true delicacy, and this year it has become even more of one. You’re paying 10% extra for it compared with a year ago.
Viennetta vanilla: +42%
‘I hate Viennetta!’ – said no one ever. What we do hate is the gigantic price increase on our favorite Christmas dessert. At a whopping 42% (!), the price increase for Viennetta vanilla absolutely takes the cake. WTF…
Good news: smoked salmon is cheaper
Before you panic and decide to just fire up the deep fryer for Christmas this year (which I don’t even think is such a bad idea!): smoked salmon has actually become cheaper. By a whopping 0.1%! Well, at least that’s a positive note to end on. And don’t forget that there are plenty of ways to save as much as possible at the supermarket. We can do this, people: put an affordable yet unforgettable Christmas dinner on the table!
