What? Is nettle tea really that expensive? And more outrageously expensive supermarket products
Keuringsdienst van Waarde went through the supermarket with a magnifying glass and a calculator, and discovered that certain products are truly outrageously expensive. Or parsley-expensive, as they put it, because dried parsley costs no less than 237 euros per kilo. Cha-ching!
You know you’re emptying your bank account when you toss Wagyu beef, white truffles and caviar into your shopping cart, but there are many more outrageously expensive products in the supermarket – ones you wouldn’t expect. The critical journalists from Keuringsdienst van Waarde converted the prices of products into prices per kilo, and that offers some surprising insights. For example, chocolate cake decorations turn out to be ridiculously expensive. A bar of Tony’s costs the equivalent of 16 euros per kilo, but chocolate cake decorations are more than twice as expensive, at no less than 33 euros per kilo.
Herbs? I can’t afford them
Those weren’t the most expensive groceries, because, for example, you pay 38 euros per kilo for anchovies with capers. It’s a good thing they come in such tiny tins… Further down their list: nettle tea (57 euros per kilo), dip sauce mix (58 euros) and stevia, you know, that sweetener: 84 euros.
The most expensive of all: dried herbs. Dried parsley comes to an impressive 237 euros per kilo, bay leaves cost 312.50 euros per kilo, and a kilo of chives will set you back almost 400 euros!
Wrinkles from poverty
But it can get even more outrageous: when you include personal-care products such as day cream and shower gel in the price comparison, you’ll be completely shocked. Night cream comes to 237 euros, and day cream is slightly cheaper, at 173 euros per kilo. The winner: eye cream, at 837 euros per kilo.
