Albert Heijn has a new fruit variety on its shelves: Limelon
Albert Heijn surprises us with new products fairly often. From spicy frikandel speciaal snacks to pistachio oil. After the crownless pineapple, there is another striking item at the supermarket giant. And this time, it really is something new. A unique fruit variety that did not exist before. Here it is… Limelon!
Anyone with even a little feel for language will have figured it out: it is a combination of lime and melon. In this case, it is a melon with a lime flavour. Original, and at the same time I think: how come nobody came up with this years ago? Lime and melon seem like a golden combination to me.
A refreshing counterpart to sweet melon
I have never been much of a fan of Galia melons and cantaloupes: too sweet for my taste. No, give me a refreshing watermelon instead. But the addition of lime could suddenly turn my aversion to sweet sugar melon around.
The Limelon™ seems to have been conceived and developed by the company HillFresh. They created a sweet melon with a sour hint of lime. Very refreshing, then, and certainly not comparable in flavour to the melons we have known for years.
Perfect balance
Well, I’m sold. The Limelon does indeed have a perfect balance between sweet and sour. I do not necessarily taste the flavour of lime very clearly, but I can definitely taste the tanginess that lime has. It is also certainly not the case that you will pull a sour face when you take a bite: you continue to taste its sweet character. In addition, it is a deliciously juicy melon that is not mealy. Is this Limelon going to compete with my all-time favorite watermelon?!
