In summer, we all turn to watermelon in droves. Deliciously refreshing and thirst-quenching, making it perfect for hot days. But now it turns out that the juicy pink melon can also get us hot and bothered. Eating watermelon is said to have more or less the same effect as a Viagra pill. Say what?!

That means no more magical blue pills that you can only get with a doctor’s prescription. No, just cut a watermelon into pieces, eat it, and all your problems are solved. The list of benefits of watermelon just keeps growing! Just like your—well, you can fill in the blank.

Citrulline and arginine

How is it that watermelon stimulates erections? It all has to do with the compounds citrulline and arginine. These are two compounds that promote the production of nitric oxide: a substance that causes the blood vessels to relax. Exactly what happens when men get an erection. And this effect also occurs when a man takes a Viagra pill.

Research

The particularly exciting effect of watermelon has been investigated, among others, by Italian researchers and scientists from Texas. For example, the Italian researchers conducted a test involving 122 participants with erectile problems. They were found to have low blood levels of citrulline and arginine. So whether watermelon really is just as effective as a Viagra pill, the researchers doubt. It could potentially be a safe alternative for people who are allergic to certain compounds in Viagra.

Watermelon recipes

So off to the greengrocer for plenty of delicious watermelons. Because with all those benefits, we might as well eat as much of it as possible, right? A watermelon mojito fruit salad, for example. Or a watermelon vodka punch. It really is such a versatile thing, that melon.
