At the FavorFlav editorial office, we don’t always agree with one another, but there’s no arguing that nothing beats a sweet slice of watermelon in summer. Finding one that’s actually sweet, on the other hand, can be rather tricky. With these tips, you’ll pick out the perfect watermelon in no time.

Always the perfect watermelon

Watermelons grow on plants and are picked when they’re ripe. Unfortunately, it often happens that they’re harvested too early. But there’s good news: you can tell by looking at the watermelon. Look for the yellow spot on the outside of the watermelon. The yellower the spot, the riper it is. In any case, don’t lug a watermelon home that has a white or pale spot. It’s a waste of energy, because this means it was picked too early and is less sweet.

Appearance matters

Go for an even, firm watermelon without spots or damaged areas.

Pick it up

A watermelon’s weight says a lot. A heavy watermelon means it’s full of water (nice and juicy) and full of flavor. When you’re at the supermarket or market, it’s best to pick up several watermelons (of the same size) and compare them with one another. Choose the heaviest one.

Knock, knock, who’s there?

This is the avocado technique for watermelons. Instead of squeezing it, tap the watermelon. If it makes a flat sound, it’s better to keep looking, because it isn’t fully ripe yet. Do you hear a hollow sound? Bingo!

Cut like a pro

Besides lugging such an enormous melon around, cutting the thing into pieces is quite a job too. Luckily, we have a solution for everything: with this hack, you can cut a watermelon very easily.

Fail

Was your search for the perfect watermelon still unsuccessful? Don’t force yourself to eat it, but turn it into something creative instead. How about a watermelon mojito poptail or champagne watermelon mimosas?
