Annoying: when your Tikkie is ignored

Super frustrating: when people ignore your payment request. Not only when it concerns a significant amount. It’s even worse when it’s a friend who keeps overlooking your Tikkie. That’s what happened to Natasja. She meets Janneke during a course. A friendship develops—until they go somewhere together.

‘When I look at my phone, I see that Janneke still hasn’t paid the payment request I sent her. It’s now been eight days since I sent it to her. I notice that I find it really annoying, that it feels as though I have to ask her for my money.
School friend
When I took a French course two years ago, Janneke sat next to me in class. A lovely woman I immediately clicked with. She has a great sense of humor, and it immediately felt as though I had found a good school friend again, just like in the old days. During class, we often stirred things up. A friendship grew, and at one point I asked if she would like to go out for lunch together.
We had a lovely afternoon, and at the end of lunch I thoughtlessly paid the bill. To be honest, I had expected Janneke to ask me to send her a Tikkie for half the amount, but she didn’t. With three big kisses and a “thank you for the delicious lunch,” she said goodbye. I didn’t pay much attention to it after that, because I assumed she would pay next time.
Again?
But when we went somewhere for a drink after French class one time, the same thing happened. I actually found that rather confusing. Janneke has a good job and, as far as I know, she’s doing well and is certainly not someone who’s hard up. She also always looks immaculate and often talks about lovely faraway holidays and renovating their house.
Because of that renovation, she didn’t have time to come to the course, and we stayed in occasional contact through the app. Until she called me two weeks ago and asked if we could meet up again sometime. She thought it would be nice to catch up and do something fun together.
Leaving quickly
We arranged to meet at a trendy lunch spot in the city, and I have to say it was really lovely to see her again. Because we had so much to talk about, we went straight from lunch to drinks, and before I knew it, the afternoon was over. Suddenly Janneke looked at her watch and said she had to leave immediately to pick someone up. Apparently, she had completely lost track of time, and she hurriedly put on her coat and walked outside, gesturing that she would call me.
Because we had spent the whole afternoon eating and drinking pleasantly, the bill was quite high this time, and I thought I could send her a Tikkie for half of it. But a week has now passed, and she still hasn’t paid me back. I actually find it quite a difficult situation. Because it’s not really about the money for me, but about the fact that I apparently keep ending up paying the bill whenever I do something with her.
Unwritten rule
As far as I’m concerned, there’s an unwritten rule that you take turns paying when you do something together, right? Or at the very least, you ask for a Tikkie so you don’t leave the other person paying the entire amount. I find it difficult to discuss this with Janneke because we don’t know each other that well yet. But if she continues to ignore my payment request over the next week, I don’t know whether I’ll want to meet up with her again.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely not stingy, but after paying a few times, it seems only logical to me that the other person picks up the bill for once, too.’
