Athletes in disbelief over the food at the Olympic Games in Paris

Just as important as winning a medal at the Olympic Games: being able to eat well and enjoyably in the Olympic Village. Especially as a top-level athlete, eating well is essential. There had already been quite a bit of fuss about the food at the Games beforehand. For example, we already knew that French fries and avocados would not be served. Now that the Games are in full swing, athletes’ reactions to the food are pouring in. And they are not exactly flattering…

The most striking reaction: according to the athletes, the diet was too vegetarian (and vegan). It had been announced beforehand that 60% of the total selection in the Olympic dining hall would be plant-based. The reason? It is better for the environment. But the organizers overlooked the fact that many athletes eat meat and eggs precisely because of their high protein content. So yes, an additional 700 kilos of eggs and a ton of extra meat were eventually added to the menu.

The food at the Olympic Games: a struggle

Athlete Raven Saunders shows in a TikTok that she is deeply disappointed with the food she is given. It’s been a struggle, she writes in the caption of her video. And honestly… We understand her. This chicken satay skewer (at least, I think that’s what it is?!) looks as if it has been sitting on the grill for an entire marathon. Isn’t eating such a charred skewer extremely unhealthy too?

Worms in fish

British swimmer Adam Peaty is also not amused by the food he is served at the Olympic Games. He compares it with the options he had in Tokyo (2021) and Rio (2016). According to him, the food served there was ‘amazing’. But in Paris… Peaty complains about the lack of protein options and the long waits. According to him, there are enormous lines at the buffets, meaning he sometimes has to wait as long as 30 minutes for his food.

The worst thing he says? Some athletes had found worms in their fish. Yes, really. Worms. I don’t know about you, but for me that would mean taking the first flight home. No medal, then.

Bland

Perhaps the most famous athlete at the Games, Simone Biles, is not really a fan of the food in the Olympic Village either. In an interview, she says that it is not really ‘proper French cuisine’ there. Her teammate Hezly Rivera is even more explicit. She simply does not think the food is good—at least, not the food they get in the dining hall.

They do not say exactly what they find wrong with it. But if we are to believe many other athletes, the food is not seasoned properly. They miss salt. American gymnast Asher Hong says, for example: ”It is simply not what you would expect at the Olympic Games. You would think they would bring better chefs to season the food a little better.”

In love with the chocolate muffin

So is it all très terrible in the Olympic dining hall in Paris? Not at all. If Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen is to be believed, there is only one thing you should get there: the chocolate muffin. Christiansen is so in love with the muffin that his TikTok page is full of videos that are essentially love letters to the snack.
