Thirsty tales

BACARDÍ Spiced will keep your summer spicy no matter what

1NUL8 Bacardi spiced

Just when we were well on our way to a summer full of festivals, we’re told there’s nothing to celebrate for the time being. Bummer! Then we’ll just throw our own party, at home or in a cocktail bar. And in rum month July, things will definitely be gezellig with a Pina Colada, Mojito, Daiquiri or a Baco 2.0 (with BACARDÍ Spiced!).

July = rum month!

Every year, July is dedicated to rum for an entire month, and this year BACARDÍ is once again turning this summer month into a Caribbean celebration. Cocktail bars throughout the Netherlands are serving innovative rum cocktails this month. Today (July 10) is National Piña Colada Day, on Sunday July 11 we celebrate National Mojito Day, and National Daiquiri Day takes place on July 19. These are the participating BACARDÍ Rum Month bars.

At Amsterdam’s The Hoxton, I had an absolute stunner of a cocktail called Pandamonium, made with BACARDÍ Carta Blanca, pandan syrup, jalapeño syrup, coconut water and lime. Unbelievably delicious!

Latest addition: BACARDÍ Spiced

A rum cocktail based on a spicy rum is also delicious, with a somewhat bolder flavor. Spiced is the latest addition to the BACARDÍ range, made with golden rum and aged in charred American oak barrels for a light smoky flavor.

Rum is made from molasses, sugarcane, yeast and water. These ingredients are fermented and then distilled, aged, filtered and blended. When blending rum, spices such as cinnamon, pepper or anise can also be added. That’s how it becomes spiced rum.

BACARDÍ Spiced is a rum infused with spices (for a pronounced flavor) and caramel (for its color). Vanilla (from an extract of Madagascan Bourbon vanilla beans), honey and cinnamon are just some of the flavors you’ll immediately pick up. And, of course, a little pepper.

No artificial sweeteners

You can go in any direction with BACARDÍ Spiced. I like to use it to make a Baco 2.0 (you’ll find the recipe below), or drink it neat on the rocks, which preserves the flavor. Unlike some other rum brands, BACARDÍ does not use artificial sweeteners in Spiced to enhance the rich flavor of the spices. I usually use the light, white BACARDÍ Carta Blanca for a Baco, but the new Spiced adds a little extra kick. Try it yourself—it’s child’s play.

How to make a Baco 2.0

• 150 ml cola • 50 ml BACARDí Spiced • lime wedge

This rum and cola is just as simple and quick as it is delicious; all you need is BACARDÍ Spiced, cola and a lime wedge. Fill a highball glass with ice, pour in 50 ml BACARDÍ Spiced and top it off with 150 ml (chilled) cola. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Race to the liquor store

Also in the mood for such a festive drink? Then July is the perfect month to visit a cocktail bar and head to the liquor store to bring home a bottle of BACARDÍ Spiced (recommended retail price €17.99).
