Belgian Snack Bar Sells Corona Burger

Hamburger Gourmet

Belgian hamburger restaurant Burgermeesters has a Corona burger on the menu. The burger comes with a sauce made with Corona (the beer, of course) and a crunchy topping of prawn crackers. Have they completely lost it?

To be fair, owner Arie Mailliard of Burgermeesters in Wevelgem wasn’t initially keen on the idea. All the special burgers on his menu refer to mayors and former mayors. They have a Quickie, referring to Vincent van Quickenborne, mayor of Kortrijk, and a Maggietje as a tribute to Maggie De Block, candidate mayor of Merchtem (and current Minister of Health). It was only when Arie discovered that Alfonso Corona had been mayor of Mexico City that he was won over, and the Corona burger could be added to the menu.

Hysteria with a wink

Hamburger chef Arie sees his burger as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the flu hysteria. He made a sauce with Corona beer for the burger and crumbles prawn crackers over the meat as a reference to China, where the flu outbreak began. Corona panic? Not at Arie’s. ‘People die from ordinary flu too. Calm down, stay relaxed and eat a burger.’
