Beware: Albert Heijn warns about peanut butter

Albert Heijn

Peanut butter, love it! Truly in every form and variety—especially with extra pieces of nuts and then a little sambal badjak added… Also irresistible (thanks to colleague Delilah): a peanut butter and pickle sandwich! Before you try that yourself, check which jar of peanut butter from Albert Heijn you’re using…

Albert Heijn has decided to remove the following peanut butter products from stores immediately as a precaution, so check your pantry or refrigerator.

These peanut butter varieties are affected

AH 100% Nut Butter Peanut Cashew with best-before date (THT) 07-2021
AH Cocoa Peanut Butter Natural with best-before date (THT) 09-2021
AH Cocoa Peanut Butter Hazelnut with best-before date (THT) 09-2021
AH Creamy Honey Crunch Peanut Butter with best-before date (THT) 02-2022
Calvé Branders dark roast 210 grams (THT) 12-2021

Albert Heijn issues a warning

There is an unintended possible presence of other types of nuts in these products. This allergen is not listed as an ingredient on the packaging and may cause an allergic reaction. If you are allergic to nuts, do not spread these types of peanut butter on your bread, but return them to an Albert Heijn store. You will receive a refund of the purchase price when you return the product. A receipt is not required.

How long can you keep it?

So this has nothing to do with the shelf life of the peanut butter in question—which, incidentally, can be much longer than what is usually stated on the jar of peanut butter. The American National Peanut Board recommends storing unopened jars in a dark, cool place and an opened jar in the refrigerator. Peanut butter stored in this recommended way, and into which no knives containing, for example, butter or jam have been dipped, can remain good for another 5 to 8 months after the best-before date. Do you see a layer of oil in the jar after a while? Nothing to worry about. That is perfectly normal; you can simply stir the oil back into the rest.

And this is the golden tip for that last bit of peanut butter!
