Beware: these are the 4 risks of eating (a lot of!) teriyaki sauce

Teriyaki-Favorflav

Suddenly, there it was: teriyaki sauce. Not only delicious on Japanese chicken skewers, but also on burgers, poke bowls, omelets, fries and… well, pretty much everything. But hold on, because if you eat too much teriyaki sauce, you do run a risk…

But everything with ‘too much’ in front of it is bad for you, my mother always used to say (except tequila, Mom), and that also applies to that delicious sauce. Stomach pain, too much sugar and salt, and a big butt: all risks of eating too much teriyaki sauce.

Too much salt

The Netherlands Nutrition Centre recommends a maximum of 6 grams of salt per day, but the average food lover can easily consume 9 grams. Everything tastes better with a pinch of salt! That applies to teriyaki sauce too. 100 grams of sauce contains almost 4 grams of salt. Risky business, because too much salt can cause heart problems.

Irritable bowels

Most people with irritable bowels and a sensitive stomach experience a lot of trouble from a sauce like teriyaki. Do you recognize this: gurgling bowels, diarrhea, bloating and pain, lots of pain? It’s not only onions, garlic, spicy food or cabbage that can cause this, but teriyaki sauce too.

Sugar rush

Without realizing it, you eat more sugar in a day than you think. It’s hidden in granola, breakfast bars, juice, fruit yogurt, you name it. And yes, also in sauces such as teriyaki sauce. One tablespoon contains approximately three to five grams of sugar.

Weight gain

A real fattening food, at 15 to 45 calories per tablespoon. And that adds up. Do we really need to explain what happens when you eat more calories than you burn?

But: ginger

It’s not all panic and misery with this sauce; thanks to the ginger, it can actually be good for you too. If you have an upset stomach, for example, ginger can help settle your tummy again. And yes, ginger is also in the sauce. But should you really start putting extra teriyaki sauce on your burger for your health?
