Bizarre: this fake egg is almost indistinguishable from a real egg

You want to eat vegan, but you can’t give up the taste of a freshly fried egg… Now what? Don’t worry: a hundred percent plant-based egg will soon be available. A company in Singapore has managed to create a vegan egg that looks exactly like an ordinary chicken egg.

Of course, there are all kinds of plant-based egg substitutes. Vegan bakers, for example, use aquafaba, the liquid from a can of chickpeas, as a substitute for egg white when making meringues or pavlova. Egg yolk is recreated with lava salt, cornflour and turmeric for the yellow color, and in baked goods it is replaced with banana, chia seeds or almond butter. But you can’t make a tasty fried egg with those ingredients; it remains a bit of a makeshift solution.

Perfect for frying
Until this company from Singapore came up with its plant-based egg. The company Float Foods created the OnlyEg, and yes: an egg yolk surrounded by egg white, perfect for frying! Ideal for the Asian market, the company writes on its website, because every kitchen in that region prepares lots of egg dishes. The site also features a video of the OnlyEg, with the ‘egg’ cheerfully bubbling in the frying pan. Looks good! The inventors think their egg will be on the market in 2022, so until then vegans will have to keep experimenting with other ingredients.
