Breakfast as a Life’s Work

Kei Yamazaki is a Japanese graphic designer with around 600k followers on Instagram. She has amassed that number since she started posting a photo of her breakfast a few years ago. Every single day.

The breakfast photos are all taken from exactly the same angle, namely from above. A white plate with various colorful bites neatly grouped together. Coffee or juice on the side. That’s it. Boring? No, apparently not.

Variety

Besides wondering how on earth this woman manages to eat all that food in the morning, you marvel at the variety. Because I dare swear that Yamazaki hasn’t eaten the same breakfast twice in all those years.

Never the same breakfast. Year in, year out.

Two years ago, she had already collected her Instagram photos in the bestseller Today’s Breakfast. And this month, her second Instagram breakfast book, Morning Table, is being published. You could see it as a catalog full of breakfast inspiration.

Honey-brie French toast

And not necessarily typically Japanese breakfasts, either. Pretty much anything can end up on Yamazaki’s plate in the morning. There are some recurring staples: boiled or poached eggs, lettuce, extremely loaded sandwiches (blueberries on a honey-brie French toast) and yogurt with toppings. And all of that as part of one and the same breakfast.

My bowl of yogurt with flaxseed and nuts looks rather pitiful by comparison.
