Chefs share 14 tips for cooking more easily and better

With the handy tricks, facts and practical tips from these chefs, your kitchen routine will get even better. Make the most of them!

#1: Be careful, sharp
Don’t put knives or other sharp objects in soapy water in the sink.
#2: Artists
Cooking is art, baking is science.
#3: Sticky
Mashed potatoes: always use a potato ricer or masher, never a blender or mixer. Otherwise you’ll end up with glue.
#4: Clean
Wash your hands.
#5: Call the fire brigade
Pan on fire? Don’t put it out with water. Turn off the heat and put a lid on the pan. And turn off the extractor hood.
#6: Toasting
Toast spices in a dry frying pan before using them: more aroma, more flavor.
#7: Have a spoon ready
Taste, taste, taste. Don’t just taste the finished product; taste while you’re cooking.
#8: Famous doesn’t mean better
Pots, pans and knives from a brand with a famous chef aren’t always better. In fact, they’re often no good at all.
#9: Better rice
Rinse rice before cooking it.
#10: Take your time
Have you cooked a steak? Let the meat rest for a while. Wrap it in aluminum foil and leave the meat in there for a few minutes—about half the time you cooked it for.
#11: Low flames
Don’t always turn the flames on your gas stove up to full blast. Hotter isn’t better.
#12: Don’t be blunt
Sharpen your knives in time.
#13: Behind!
Say so when you’re walking behind someone in the kitchen.
#14: Ouch
Don’t use a wet dish towel to hold a hot pan.
