Cola with milk isn’t as disgusting as you might think

Is this an American trend, or a belated April Fools’ joke? You’d think the latter, but cola with milk – because that’s what we’re talking about – is becoming a trend in the United States. Since you shouldn’t believe everything you read, I tried it. My verdict? Hmm, not bad.

Stranger things happen in the United States. Just to name a few: a bouquet of pickles, donut burgers or burgers with banana and peanut butter. Not always very refined from a culinary perspective, but an Elvis burger does sound pretty tasty in a greasy sort of way…
So when we read about CoMilk, we owe it to you, dear readers, to investigate it thoroughly.
Hardcore Cola
Time to taste it. Amid all the online fuss about the new trend, I fortunately find the ideal proportions: 1/3 cola and 2/3 whole milk. No Diet Coke or Coke Zero, but regular, full-fat, sugar-loaded, hardcore Coca-Cola. Luckily, I have both at home, so the experiment can begin.
- Eenvoudig recept
- De basis: cola
- Melk erbij
- Ziet er niet gek uit, toch?
- Maar na een uurtje…
I smell… nothing
There’s no advice on which order to pour them in, so I start with the cola. When I pour in the milk, it starts foaming like crazy. For a moment, I’m afraid of a Diet Coke-and-Mentos situation, but it’s not too bad. My glass looks like a mediocre coffee with milk. I carefully take a sniff: nothing. That’s good, right? Then I hesitantly take a sip: hmm. Hmmm. Mmmmmm. It’s actually not bad at all. It reminds me of cooled-down tea with milk or the last bit of chai latte. Sweet, but also creamy. And cinnamon-y. And… I wouldn’t mind another sip.
It resembles a float
The American sites discussing CoMilk compare it to floats. They’re not very well known here – unfairly so. Put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in your glass of cola and you won’t believe what happens – creamy, sweet, heavenly. Even better with root beer, if you can get your hands on some. Of course, CoMilk is much less creamy than a float like that, but it doesn’t taste nearly as disgusting as you might expect. Could this become the new karnejus? It could! We just need to come up with a good name for it, because nobody wants to order CoMilk on a terrace; it doesn’t sound right. Cola Latte? Cola Mistaken? Colacchino? Milky Cola?
To be honest: mysterious lumps
So the Cola Mistaken didn’t go down the drain, but came with me to my desk so I could enjoy drinking it while typing this piece. After an hour, I look at my glass, and what do I see? Disgusting lumps are floating in my Colacchino. Suddenly, that whole Cola Latte doesn’t seem so appealing anymore. When I prod them with a teaspoon, they remain firmly stuck together. What is this? Gross, brrr, get rid of it.
