Craving pizza? In Rome, you can pull one straight out of a wall

Pizzamachine-Favorflav

A vending machine where you can buy a fresh pizza 24 hours a day—isn’t that fantastic? In the center of Rome stands Pizza Mr Go, a machine that bakes pizzas. Not all Italians are immediately enthusiastic…

The pride Italians take in typically Italian dishes is famous—or infamous. Recipes must be prepared as authentically as possible, as Jamie Oliver discovered when he put his own spin on a few classics. And can you still remember the stunned look on Italian TV chef Gino d’Acampo’s face when the presenter suggested stirring diced ham into the pasta? Italians feel that same outrage when they look at Pizza Mr Go, a pizza takeaway machine in the heart of Rome.

Nurses are happy

The principle is simple: choose a pizza, put in the money, and a hot pizza rolls out of the machine. Inside the machine, dough is kneaded, tomato sauce is spread and toppings are distributed, producing a fresh little pizza in barely three minutes. The owner is surprised by the negative reactions to his invention: ‘I get a lot of positive reactions from nurses and taxi drivers,’ he says, because he thinks his pizzas are mainly being pulled from the machine at night, after work or a night out.

Stomach ache guaranteed

Passers-by interviewed by NBC are critical. ‘I make the tastiest pizza at home, and if I had no other choice I’d get one from a pizzeria, but never from this machine,’ says a young woman. ‘The crust is very thin,’ complains a boy who takes a cheese pizza from the machine. ‘Really poor quality,’ says a pizza maker who is handed a vending-machine pizza. ‘The dough hasn’t risen—you’ll definitely get a stomach ache from this.’

Margheritas: all sold out

The owner isn’t worried. On Saturday evening, all the margherita pizzas had already sold out, and his machine is extremely busy. ‘I’m simply offering a service that didn’t exist before.’
