Croky Mexicano chips: here’s what we think

Croky Mexicano Fan chips

It’s 9:30 in the morning and my first task of the day is testing the new Croky chips. Do you hear me complaining? Absolutely not. Because Croky has come up with a new flavour that will make every snack-bar regular bounce with excitement: Mexicano Fan chips. How Mexican is it? And of course… Is this a bag of chips you’ll want in your snack cupboard?

Smart move by Croky: turning one of the Netherlands’ favourite snacks into chips. Especially with the European Football Championship just around the corner, when we’ll want to keep our snack cupboard well stocked for several weeks. The snack has been around since 1984 and was ‘invented’ by De Vries Vleessnacks from Dordrecht. Fun fact: the snack was created in response to the 1986 World Cup football qualifiers. And so the ball—or rather, circle—is completely round.

Hit or miss

It’s common knowledge that Croky’s Bolognese chips are absolutely brilliant. They’re the Bolo chips of all Bolo chips. Perfectly seasoned, with a wonderfully satisfying crunch (which Croky is also known for) and just the right amount of salt. But, to be honest, not every Croky chip flavour is a winner. FavorFlav’s Wieke, for example, isn’t exactly a fan of this brand’s paprika chips. Fair enough—tastes differ. So I’m going into this taste test with an open mind. Although there is one important point to keep in mind: I know what the Mexicano tastes like, and I want to taste that flavour again in these chips.

Where’s the Mexicano?

Let me get straight to the point. When I open the bag of chips, I don’t smell Mexicano. Even more disappointing: I don’t taste Mexicano either. What a shame! This is a real missed opportunity. Comparing them with the chips I tested recently (the Doritos with Flame Grilled Whopper flavour), I think Doritos performs better than Croky on the flavour-creation front. Those Doritos chips really did taste more like a Whopper than these Croky chips taste like a Mexicano.

Tasty? Definitely

Okay, not the most positive start. Sorry. Are they tasty chips, though? I think so. They’re spicy, which I absolutely enjoy in chips. Not the my-mouth-is-on-fire kind of spicy, but just enough heat to keep you on your toes. I also think the amount of salt is perfect, and they have that lovely Croky crunch (yes!). They’re simply tasty chips, full stop. I’m just not sure ‘Mexicano’ belongs on the packaging. I give them a 7.5 out of 10. I think the Croky Mexican Taco performed slightly better in the taste test.

Want to try them yourself? You can buy Croky Mexicano Fan chips at Hoogvliet, Plus and Lidl. The prices for a 175-gram bag vary slightly. At Plus, for example, you can get the chips for €1.99, while at Lidl I picked them up for a promotional price of €1.50 (2 for €3).
