Don Papa has a new rum: the Port Cask
Don Papa Rum is known not only for its delicious taste and its stunning presentation (those labels, amazing!) but also for its special releases. Such as the new Port Cask, aged in port casks.
Don Papa Rum is a single island rum from the island of Negros (also known as Sugarlandia, because of the enormous amount of sugar cane) in the Philippines, the third-largest rum market in the world after India and the United States. In addition to the tempting Don Papa 7 Year Old, Don Papa 10 (aged for at least 10 years in American oak), the Rare Cask, the Don Papa Sherry Cask, the Rye Aged and the Sevilliana Cask, The Don is launching a new rum: the Port Cask. This limited-edition, super-premium rum commemorates the five-hundredth anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world.
Rum with a story
Five hundred years ago, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was commissioned by King Charles I of Spain to undertake an expedition in search of the Spice Islands. This epic journey ultimately led to the Spanish landing in the Philippines. This journey inspired the Port Cask limited edition, and the detailed, surrealistic design of the bottle and tube reflects Magellan’s three-year journey; it depicts the creatures living in Sugarlandia and the revolutionary hero Papa Isio, one of the leaders of the Philippine revolution at the end of the 19th century, who inspired the name Don Papa. His leadership and courage played a crucial role in the liberation from Spanish rule on Negros.
Aged in port casks
The rum is aged in the unique volcanic climate around the foothills of the active Mount Canlaon volcano, at 2435 metres the highest mountain on the island of Negros. First for two years in old bourbon casks and then in rich, ruby-coloured port casks for another five years. The result is a rum with a dark, spicy character and warming fruitiness.
