Dutch Star Chefs Give Online Quarantine Cooking Lessons
Following the example of world-famous chef Massimo Bottura, who makes the livestream Kitchen Quaratine on Instagram every day, our Dutch star chefs have also started cooking online.
How do you make sure that, even in these bizarre coronavirus times, you still manage to put something decent on the table? By cooking with your favourite star chef, for example! So get your apron ready for Jaimie van Heije and Edwin Vinke.

Chef’s restaurant Jaimie van Heije, in picturesque Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, is closed, but fortunately Jaimie remains active in the kitchen. On Instagram, you can cook along with him. Chef Jaimie van Heije’s Instagram account is already a must-follow for anyone who loves beautiful food photos and sneakers. (Would he already have these Nikes, which pay tribute to the bakers of Paris?).
Jaimie: “When the news came that we really had to close, I immediately wanted to switch to delivery, but through the existing networks, because I don’t have any scooters at home. But it turned out that I can’t join these networks, because I’m in a black spot between Amsterdam Zuid-Oost, Amstelveen and Ouderkerk. So I went grocery shopping and saw all these empty pasta shelves, but there was still gnocchi. So I thought, people probably don’t know what they can make with it. So now, unlike at the restaurant, I’m making really simple things. And I’m being flooded with responses—it’s really catching on. It doesn’t bring in any money, so I’ll keep looking for other possibilities, but until then I’ll happily keep cooking. It’s also really nice to see how enthusiastically everyone cooks along. I wake up in the morning and already have lots of messages from people asking what we’re eating today.’

Two-star chef Edwin Vinke is also continuing to cook now that his restaurant, Kromme Watergang in the Zeeland town of Sluis, is closed because of the coronavirus and he does not offer takeaway meals either. In his envy-inducing kitchen (check out that knife set!), he makes a simple dish every day around lunchtime and shares the preparation method, useful tips (for example, about the importance of mise-en-place) and his recipes on YouTube. Today’s menu: a chicken stir-fry. Will you join in?
