Finally, finally, after a considerable delay, the downtown version of chef Mario Batali’s New York food hall Eataly will open on August 11 after all. On the third floor of the WTC, Tower 4, to be precise.

Eataly Downtown is not simply a copy of the one on Fifth Ave. Like every Eataly branch worldwide, this food hall has its own theme. In this case, bread. After all, didn’t America’s 31st president Herbert Hoover already say: ‘World peace means a peace of bread’?

‘We chose bread so that we would have a platform where bread is broken and people talk about culture in one of the most important and diverse cities in the world,’ says CEO Nicola Farinetti of the originally Italian concept.

World peace means a peace of bread, doesn’t it?

There is an in-house bakery and pasta workshop, and La Piadina Romagnola sells filled grilled flatbreads. Veteran establishment I Panini is also there, serving traditional cold and hot Italian sandwiches. In addition, pasticcini (pastries) are sold, along with four casual and one upscale restaurant, six take-away stands, a coffee bar and a wine bar.

‘As soon as you step inside, you see a huge pile of bread baked on site. A symbol of community spirit and connection, but also of our dedication to healthy, quality ingredients,’ it says on the Eataly website.

In 2018, the Netherlands will get its first very own Eataly food hall somewhere in Amsterdam. What would the theme be? Cheese? Or cocoa?
