Expert reveals how to check whether there are bed bugs in your hotel bed

One of the worst kinds of bad luck you can have? A hotel bed with bed bugs. According to this expert, this is the way to check whether those nasty little critters are waiting for you in bed…
Because it’s certainly not just hotel rooms in New York that have a bad reputation; in the Netherlands, too, you can end up in a pretty filthy hotel room. The worst part is that at first glance, everything may seem perfectly fine. That’s why this expert demonstrates how to thoroughly inspect a hotel bed:
Get your phone ready
In any case, it can be useful to take photos of problems in your hotel room. But hotel expert Halee, who in 15 years in the hotel industry worked her way up from housekeeper to owner of a sales support company for hotels, says the first thing you should do before even unpacking your suitcase is turn off all the lights and switch on your phone’s flashlight.
Every corner and crevice
Next, walk straight to the bed and use your camera to inspect every corner, seam and crevice on, in and around the mattress. She demonstrates how to do it in a TikTok video. According to her, that’s where bed bugs prefer to hide. Although they’re small, they aren’t microscopic, and you can distinguish them with the naked eye.
Bloodstains are also a bad sign
Something else to look out for? Whether you see small bloodstains (EW). This could indicate the bugs’ excrement, which contains human blood. Yay, #hotellife! Halee also says that bed bugs certainly don’t only occur in cheap or run-down hotels. According to her, they’re brought in by people.
