Fancy schmancy: you can now buy a shrimp Whopper
You already knew that you can eat wonderfully in Japan, from sushi, okonomiyaki, and ramen to the hugely popular Japanese curry. But when it comes to fast food, it’s a treat here too. At Burger King in Japan, you can even order a shrimp Whopper these days!
The Shrimp Whopper didn’t actually make its debut in Japan; this shrimp treat was already available in South Korea and comes in two varieties: shrimp with tartar sauce and shrimp with spicy tomato sauce. A Surf ‘n’ Turf burger—in other words, meat and fish in one dish—sounds absolutely delicious, doesn’t it?
Status symbol
Surf ‘n’ Turf originally refers to a dish that combines shellfish with red meat. Surf refers to fish from the ocean (surfing), while turf comes from the English term turf, meaning grass. In the 1960s and ’70s, a Surf ‘n’ Turf dish consisting mostly of fried steak and grilled lobster tail was typical of American middle-class cuisine; because of the lobster tail, it was truly considered a status symbol. And personally, I still think a shrimp burger like this is pretty fancy. I hope it makes its way to Europe one day too. In the meantime, I’ll make this top-notch dish of crispy fried shrimp toast once again. There’s no meat involved, but it’s a seriously tasty little fast-food snack that you can make in no time.
