World news: Burger King’s Rebel Whopper

A case of world news: as of today, the burgers from the Vegetarische Slager are available in 2,400 Burger King locations across Europe.

You might think that the burgers sold at Burger King in the United States are the same as the European ones, but nothing could be further from the truth. In the US, the plant-based burger is made by the company Impossible Foods, but that burger was not approved by the European Union because the American version contains genetically modified ingredients. Good news for the Vegetarische Slager, whose ‘meat’ did pass the test.
Rebel Whopper
Since veggie burger is a pretty boring name for a rebellious burger without meat, they very appropriately named it Rebel Whopper.
Vamos a Espana
As of today, the Rebel Whopper is available in Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Poland. The United Kingdom will follow soon, according to Burger King. It is not yet known when the burger will be available here, unfortunately. Until then, as a vegetarian you can simply order the Veggie King.
Converted former butcher
The Vegetarische Slager sprang from the mind of former livestock farmer Jaap Korteweg ten years ago, after he converted to vegetarianism. Visionary Jaap could already see the current veggie/vegan boom coming, but everyone thought he was crazy. The name alone: Vegetarische Slager — there was no better way to rile up both staunch vegetarians and carnivores. But in 2019, Jaap can look back with satisfaction. He received dozens of offers to sell his company. Ultimately, he sold it to Unilever — cha-ching!
Nominated
Because of the enormous success of the Vegetarische Slager — the ‘butcher’s’ products are available in more than 3,500 shops across fifteen countries — Jaap Korteweg has been nominated for the annual FavorFlav Food Top 100. The party of the year, all about one question: who are the true tastemakers of the moment in the world of food & drink? The winners will be announced on November 18, with the visionary butcher among the contenders. Stay tuned!
