Forget the Cheese Board, Here’s the Fry Board

The wheel, the light bulb and fast Wi-Fi: all wonderful inventions, but nothing compared to the latest snack trend: the fry board. It’s a large board packed with different types of fries and dips. Brilliant, right?

American food blogs even feature recipes for a fry board, or French Fries Board in English. Recipe? Don’t make us laugh. Anyway: turn on the deep fryer and fry the potato croquettes, curly fries, sweet potato fries, Grandma’s thick-cut chips and French pommes in it. Place a sheet of baking paper on a nice board, pile all your fries on top and arrange bowls of mayo, ketchup, piccalilly, onions, curry sauce and other dips in between. Put out some napkins, and dig in.

Children’s party, student house

You could see this fry board as a festive version of the fry table: a table covered with aluminium foil, a mountain of fries and snacks for everyone. Popular in student houses and at children’s parties. And that fry table is in turn the bigger sibling of the team fries: a tray full of fries in the sports club canteen, to celebrate a more-or-less sporting achievement with the whole team.

Fancy snack bar

Or is the fry board a reaction to the nouveau friture trend? These are posh snack bars where fries—with a capital F—are served, made from fancy potatoes and accompanied by truffle mayonnaise. Not popular with everyone: Schilo van Coevorden, chef of Taiko and Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam, even calls it bullshit. ‘Has the quality of the regular snack bar declined so dramatically that we now need fancy snack bars to eat something as simple as good fries?!’

Whatever the case: the fry board. Which trendy joint will put it on the menu next?
