Fries have to be fried: Nick has had enough and is organizing the Dutch Airfryer-Throwing Championship

Airfryer vs frituur

I thought the biggest discussion surrounding fries was about what to call them—friet or patat—but apparently there’s another heated snack controversy going on. Namely, how to prepare those fries (or patat). For Nick, it’s clear: in frying fat, and therefore definitely not in an Airfryer. He feels so strongly about it that he is even organizing the Dutch Airfryer-Throwing Championship.

Now that’s the kind of passion I love. Although I have to say that I don’t have a particularly strong opinion on this subject, and if I had to choose, I’d still lean toward the Airfryer… I have one at home, after all, and make grateful use of it. I haven’t deep-fried anything in years.

“Fries have to be greasy and grease has to stay grease”

Nick Waaijenburg from Mierlo is definitely completely ready for it. He is a fries vendor by profession (#lifegoals) and, as the owner of Friethuis Reintje, he would like to make a statement. And that statement is clear: fries should be prepared in fat and absolutely not with hot air. “I wanted to think of something to get rid of those things,” he says about the Dutch Airfryer-Throwing Championship. This does indeed seem like an adequate way to do that, because those things are guaranteed to break, of course. Although it seems quite challenging to actually throw one of those things very far, but that aside.

And what about the health aspect? Isn’t the Airfryer much healthier than fries cooked in fat? “Having fries once a week really can’t hurt. Going to the Chinese takeaway five times a week isn’t healthy either,” says Nick. I can’t do anything other than agree with him. Want to take part? The event will take place on 10 July, and no worries: disposable Airfryers will be provided. Okay, actually, I’m convinced: I’ll be there, Nick.
