From Girl Dinner to Crompouce: these are TikTok’s food trends of 2023

Crompouce kersthanger

There are a few hardcore TikTok fans on the FavorFlav editorial team. Because whatever you think of this platform, the fact that you can trip over the (sometimes amazing) recipes and hotspots from around the world is undeniable.

And yes, those queues TikTok causes have become pretty irritating by now, and we also don’t understand some of the recipes and food trends. Still, we’ve listed the most important food trends according to TikTok for you.

The most important TikTok food trends of 2023

A few crackers, cheese and some fruit for dinner? 2023 was the year in which throwing snacks and leftovers onto a plate as a meal finally got a name: Girl Dinner.

Girl Dinner: 39 million views in the Netherlands

Possibly one of the biggest food trends of the past year, but girl dinner is also a controversial food trend. It began as a way to make an easy meal when you didn’t feel like cooking, and grew into a universal need for easy meals. The trend exploded, and the TikTok community massively shared their own (satirical) interpretations of Girl Dinners, ranging from a bottle of wine with a tomato to cooked pasta with cheese.

Crompouce: 71 million views in the Netherlands

The whole of the Netherlands went into a frenzy. Bakers were falling over one another to offer the brown-and-pink snack, and we all queued up for it. The crompouce was impossible to escape this year. And things got completely out of hand. There were threats of a crompouce lawsuit because of all the copycats. And there were quite a few. Suddenly, everything could be covered in pink icing—until we became sick to death of all the crossbreeds. Hence the plea to put an end to the crompouce madness. Enough is enough, TikTok! Except for the crompouce Christmas bauble, which we do like.

Pumpkin spice: 11 million views in the Netherlands

Pumpkin spice, a magical blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves, is not just a flavour but a mass autumnal craving. This spicy blend has achieved true cult status and has even become an annual phenomenon. From pumpkin spice lattes to pumpkin spice magarita and from pumpkin spice pepernoten to pumpkin spice hummus. Fortunately, it only lasts for a short period of the year, because after a few months we’ve had enough of pumpkin-spicing everything.

This trend analysis is part of Year on TikTok 2023 and is based on internal research and trend analyses conducted from January through October 2023.
