This new TikTok trend is life-threatening: ‘Can damage your stomach’

tiktok girl breakfast

The ‘girl dinner’ trend can hardly have escaped your notice if you’re also regularly on TikTok. Honestly, I found it quite funny, and some of the TikToks were painfully relatable too (I can also be pretty lazy when I have to eat but have nothing in the house). You can’t really call it cooking; whatever you have at home simply gets eaten. So that could be a tin of corn, or a chicken fillet for on bread — or a combination of those. Girl dinner means making as little effort as possible. You can imagine that dietitians aren’t exactly thrilled about this trend… Although one has now emerged that worries them even more.

After ‘girl dinner’, ‘girl breakfast’ is now going viral, and it’s not exactly a healthy meal — in fact, experts are warning about health risks.

Girl breakfast = no breakfast

What is a ‘girl breakfast’? Put simply, it amounts to ‘no breakfast’, so it’s hardly surprising that experts aren’t enthusiastic about it. On TikTok, many girls film themselves getting up with a cigarette, a vape or a cup of coffee (or an oat cappu, of course, if you live in Amsterdam..) and count that as breakfast. And it’s becoming an increasingly serious problem: every year, people seem to skip breakfast more often, and women do so even more than men.

This is especially a major trend among young people; 60.7 percent of girls said they eat breakfast, compared with 74.4 percent of boys. And at that age, it’s particularly important to eat breakfast, because otherwise you start the day without energy when you have to go to school — and naturally, your concentration suffers as a result. The province of Groningen has even set aside €100,000 to invest in projects that help children who arrive at school hungry. And a trend like this certainly doesn’t help.

But there’s even more bad news

Having breakfast with a Starbucks coffee variant with a complicated name doesn’t make things any better; all the added ingredients simply mean that you’re actually having sweets for breakfast instead of drinking coffee. Even though it fills you up more than black coffee, you haven’t made a healthy choice. So if you’re doing this because you want to lose weight: don’t. If you skip breakfast, you’re more likely to reach for fatty foods at lunchtime, and if you have breakfast with an overly sweet coffee from a chain like Starbucks, you’re consuming far more unnecessary calories, and it doesn’t contain any healthy nutrients either.

It probably isn’t even necessary to mention this, but since this trend has already been viewed more than 25 million times, I’ll say it anyway just to be safe: smoking is not a complete breakfast, and neither is vaping — and this can even damage your stomach if you make a habit of it.

Long story short: don’t join in on the ‘girl breakfast’ trend. Just make a smoothie bowl or açaí bowl, for example. Much healthier, and it looks good too.
