Good news for vegans: first vegan supermarket opens in Amsterdam

Recently, it was world news: the first Vegan Butcher opened in England. A vegan butcher, yes indeed: the news landed like a bombshell, and then again shortly afterwards, when everything sold out in 1 day! We don’t have a vegan butcher yet, but soon Amsterdam will finally have a real vegan supermarket.

Actually, it’s quite strange that there still isn’t a dedicated vegan supermarket in Amsterdam, because more and more supermarkets are expanding their vegan ranges – there is certainly demand for (increasingly more) vegan products. With Vegan Fresco, the ‘first 100% vegan & plant based supermarket in Amsterdam’, the capital has the scoop. All plant-based products in 1 place: and a sustainably designed shop, to boot.

‘Why did it take so long?’

‘A great initiative!’, ‘I can’t wait!’ and ‘Why did it take so long?’. These are some of the reactions from the 1,300 surveys that founder James Fresco has already received, after he put brochures through the letterboxes of people living near the future supermarket. The question: whether there would be a need for such a supermarket. “The messages we receive are incredibly positive. It really turns out that people want this,” James tells Het Parool.

Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam-West

That neighbourhood is Baarsjes, by the way. The shop will be located on Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam-West, an area that is becoming increasingly fun; a Grapedistrict branch also recently opened there. Of the respondents, 56.4 percent said they would like to shop at the new vegan supermarket, while 40.1 percent indicated they might do so.

Crowdfunding, will you join in?

The supermarket is now under construction, directly opposite Albert Heijn. The doors will open in mid-January, with the help of crowdfunding. Would you like to contribute or help think about the range? Then take a look at Vegan Fresco.

More vegan supermarkets in the Netherlands

Incidentally, Vegan Fresco is not the first vegan supermarket in the Netherlands; there are already 2 in Utrecht and The Hague (Veggie 4U and Vmarkt), and in Budel (North Brabant), too, people can shop at a 100% vegan supermarket, the Bio Vegan winkel. This past March, the latter shop opened (fun fact: in an authentic windmill), and besides being 100% vegan, the Bio Vegan Winkel’s range is also 85% organic. Interested but not along your route? Delivery is available throughout the Netherlands. Vegan Fresco will be the 4th vegan supermarket in the Netherlands.
