Ground meat at AH now in a bag: 500,000 kilos less plastic per year

If you buy ground meat at Albert Heijn, it will now come in a bag instead of a tray. That saves more than 500,000 kilos of plastic annually – a reduction of 70%. And it also means less waste for you; your plastic recycling bin will take longer to fill up.

Albert Heijn has been working on reducing plastic in its stores for some time. In 2025, Albert Heijn aims to use 20 million kilos less packaging material. In addition, the packaging of all own-brand products must then be 100% recyclable. To achieve that goal, all packaging for own-brand products is being examined to see whether it can be improved. For example, more and more Albert Heijn stores no longer have plastic bags in the fruit and vegetable section. They have been replaced by sustainable produce bags.

From meat to cheese
Starting next week, ground meat will be packaged in a plastic bag. To protect the ground meat, the bag is slightly inflated because oxygen has been added. Next month, Albert Heijn will tackle the packaging of sliced cheese. Let’s just hope that the cheese packaging won’t be those dreadful vacuum packages that regularly cause a bloodbath here in the editorial office…
