Don’t eat raw onions, go easy on garlic, stay away from spicy curry – all dishes that can cause your stomach acid to flare up. Quitting smoking is another tip. And raising the head of your bed slightly is worth trying. But physician-researcher Jeroen Schuitenmaker from AMC conducted research and came up with a practical solution: sleep on your left side. His doctoral thesis shows that people who sleep on their left side experience less heartburn.

Esophagus

On average, we suffer from heartburn about once a month, Schuitenmaker writes. A small group of people, around 5 percent, even experience regurgitation and that unpleasant burning sensation every day. Heartburn means that some of the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus, causing that unpleasant feeling.

Extra tip

Not eating before going to bed, quitting smoking and losing a few kilos are usually the tips family doctors give when people complain of heartburn. According to researcher Schuitenmaker, the tip to sleep mainly on your left side should be added to that list.
